Hi there, I’m Farnoosh Brock and I help you become more successful at your job. Today we talk about a topic that I wish I was better at when I first started my career, and that is how to have an effective meeting with your boss.
If you’re not already having regular conversations with your boss or your direct manager, you need to be having these talks.
Today, we talk about how to conduct an effective one-on-one conversation; one that really impresses your boss and one that makes him want to continue having these conversations with you.
I will give you a very simple format to follow. This is one that I have found to be most successful and one that you can easily put together.
You have the one-on-one conversation schedules first on your boss’ calendar, and you show up and after a little bit of small talk, you get to the agenda. You go in with a prepared agenda and here is where the three-step comes in.
How to Have an Effective Meeting with Your Boss
Step #1: The first step is that you cover your most recent accomplishments. These are your most notable accomplishments since your last conversation with your boss. If you don’t already do this, I have another video where I talk about the importance of having a running list of your accomplishments, so be sure to watch that.
Step #2: The second thing that you’re going to cover after your accomplishments is a challenge that you’ve faced in this period of time since you last spoke to your boss, and how you overcame it.
For instance, maybe your project ran over budget.
Maybe you lost a major resource.
Maybe you had a sickness come up, or whatever it is, that was a challenge but you want to make sure that you share with him how you resolved it.
After this, you ask your boss:
“What do you think? Do you have any further advice for me on this? I’d love to know your opinion.”
Doing this shows your boss that you are a leader, that you can handle challenges that inevitably come up in your career, and that you manage them, you overcome them, and then you go to him for further advice.
Step #3: The last step that you cover in your one-on-one conversation is one of the most important ones, so don’t skimp on this one. This is where you reset expectations with your boss.
Just as you are delivering your part on your projects, on your performance to your boss, he or she also has to deliver to you on your next compensation adjustment, on your recognition, on your upcoming promotion which is something I talk about a lot if you come to fasttrackpromotion.com, because it’s important to get recognized.
So you reset expectations in this stage by asking:
“So, I just want to make sure we are on track since our last conversation. Is there anything else I need to be doing to move to the next level, or to earn my next promotion?”
This is a hard one. It takes guts, it takes confidence, but if you’re doing everything else in your job, having this part of the conversation is critical to your advancement.
3-Step Process on How to Have an Effective Meeting with Your Boss
So, again just to recap for you, three-step process for every one-on-one conversation and you prepare in advance:
- Your most recent accomplishments
- Your challenge that you faced and how you overcame it
- Resetting expectations again with the boss, how you’re doing on your progress for your next promotion or your next compensation adjustment.
If you follow this format, not only does your boss recognize you as a leader because having effective conversations and being able to lead a meeting is a leadership quality, he or she will also start to see you differently. They will start to recognize that you take your career seriously and they will start to take you seriously as a part of their valuable contributors to the company.
So, follow this three-step process in your next one-on-one conversation, and if you don’t have one scheduled on the calendar already, make sure you get that on the calendar and let me know how this goes for you.
