Improve Your Boss’s Opinion Fast with One Simple Question
Hi. I’m Farnoosh Brock. I help you get noticed and get ahead at your job with proven tips and strategies. Today, I want to tell you about a simple question you can ask your boss so that it can change his perspective on you altogether. In the past, when I have used this in my career, it has built my relationship with my boss and it has improved his trust in me.
This is the question: How else can I support you?
Again, I repeat: How else can I support you, boss?
So, you can ask this question the next time that you’re having your one-on-one conversation with them, or you see an opportunity where you are catching up with him or her. This is a question where it can go two ways.
Either he comes back and says, “Oh! Thank you so much for asking. I can’t think of anything right now.” That’s okay, because just posing the question tells your boss you are thinking big. You’re thinking beyond your own little to-do list and your own little world and job at the workplace, and you want to play a bigger role. You want to contribute on a higher level, because remember, your boss has his own agenda. He or she has their own boss breathing down their neck- or not, but you get the point- and you playing a role in supporting your boss can only work to your advantage.
Another way this can go is he comes back to you and says, “You know what? You can actually help me with such and such.” There is your golden opportunity. Whatever he gives you, you are going to run with it and do a fantastic job because this is an opportunity to really get recognized.
So, remember the question: How else can I support you, boss? This is a simple question you can ask the next time the opportunity arises and I bet it will change the way your boss values you as a member of his team.
