How to Recover from Mistakes at Work and Turn Them into Career Opportunities
Hi there, I’m Farnoosh Brock and I created Fast Track Promotion to help you create massive success in your career, and today I talk to you about how you can recover from work place mistakes which happen to all of us, and how to regain trust fast.
Tell me, has this happened to you? You’re at your work, you’re at your job going about your daily business and suddenly you get a knot in your stomach because you realize you’ve made a mistake. You missed a major meeting, you forgot to call the client back, you didn’t get back to someone on a deadline, and your first reaction is panic because the adrenaline rushes in, and two things may happen which you need to avoid.
Number one: You get emotional and you overreact.
Number two: You may be tempted to cover it up.
These are two things that you really need to stay away from.
So, the first thing I would say you should do when you realize you’ve made a mistake is to simply take a deep breath. Just pause and gather yourself. I like to think of what Louise Hay talks about, which is tell yourself: “I’m safe, always well and everything is going to work out for my highest good.”
This is an affirmation that just brings you back and grounds you and helps you think clearly, because here is what you may not know: your company doesn’t care that you made a mistake. What they really care about is how you recover from it.
Are you hiding it? Are you trying to cover it up? Are you trying to escape from it? Or, are you coming forth honestly and handling it professionally?
So, what they’re really looking for is for you to handle it with grace and as a leader.
These are a couple of tips I’m going to give you to do just that.
Number one tip when you realize you’ve just made a mistake is to find the person that is most impacted by your mistake. You go to this person, you apologize to them, you tell them everything that has happened and you offer two solutions on how you can make it up to them as quickly as possible.
As you do this, be gracious with your time, with your efforts, and be willing to do anything that this person asks. This may be more than one person but you have to identify the people affected by the mistake the most.
The second thing you need to do is to inform your boss. You need to go to your boss, have an honest conversation and say,
“Look, I had a complete oversight. I’m so sorry this happened. It won’t happen again, and everything is under control. I have taken steps to take care of it.”
This shows your boss you are a professional, you are a leader, you are responsible for the consequences of your actions, and that’s what a leader does because mistakes happen to all of us. So when you handle mistakes properly and recover from them, you actually turn your mistakes into opportunities.
