Eradicate these Poisonous Words: “I am too old! It’s too late!”
Are you too old and is it too late to move up the corporate ladder and to realize your dream career? The answer is no and it is a fact, not a word to comfort you or give you false hope.
Some of the strategies we have talked about are doing specific things in order to get promoted. Today, we talk about the thinking part.
What thoughts are you thinking and what limiting beliefs are you imposing on yourself?
Beware because those are the worst career stoppers.
FACT: I read a recent career article that said the average age of a well-paid corporate superstar is not exactly 23 or even 33, so relax. It’s much older and that’s the average, which means there are successful careerists way older who take on the job.
You are here on earth to have a long and successful career, well into your 70s and beyond – heck, I never ever plan to retire. Why would you want to retire when you do work you love?
You have time, you fabulous careerist that are on this path, and you can re-invent yourself and your career even in your golden years – I had a student from a program where I teach corporate employees how to exit their jobs and this guy totally re-invented himself at 65 and was taking on a new career.
The number one thing that stops all of us in our tracks is our own thinking.
So stop believing there is such a thing as “too old” or “too late”. Eradicate your self-limiting thoughts, which are nothing more than poison for your brain.
Stop saying this to yourself. Stop believing it.
Instead, start saying to yourself: “I am exactly on time for doing work that I love and building the career that I want!”
One of my best clients said this to me before we started working together: “I am just past their prime, too old to start a new career path and too old to climb the corporate ladder.” Made me so sad to hear it first – she no longer says it or believes it thought. In fact, she finally moved past her stumbling blocks and is quite successful at her job!
Ask yourself if it is really true or is this just a way out so you stay a victim of your circumstance and you blame everything else for not being able to do work that you can love and create wealth that you crave for yourself and others?
The “But I’m just …” is a pure expression of weakness and fear, something that your ego has mastered so well that the poisonous thoughts have become completely second nature to you. They even begin to sound normal so they must be true. Not so!
They are self-limiting in every way and you – and only you – impose them on yourself.
Power Affirmations to Supercharge Your Career
Your greatest advantage over your co-workers is to understand how you get in your own way – then get out of your own way. The rest will be a piece of cake, which I will share as we move forward to our closing lessons.
So I want to offer you a prayer, an affirmation, a few phrases, a mantra that you repeat over and over until you can start believing every word.
If you have never done any affirmations, now is a perfect time to start. Affirmations are positive phrases and mantras in the first-person present tense that you repeat to yourself over and over and over again.
- I affirm that I am not too old but that waiting a day longer after today is a complete waste of my time.
- I accept that I am where I am in life and I take full responsibility for it but I am not going to dwell on my present circumstances.
- I believe in my own abilities and my own gifts and today is the ideal time that I can start sharing those gifts and abilities.
- I know I can build my own dream, passionate work, profit and wealth, starting today, and starting now.
- The time is right. The age irrelevant. I believe in myself.
Today’s strategy was more for your heart than your mind. I hope you are cool with that.
See? You need to engage all those amazing organs and have a holistic approach for creating your ideal work. When all the pillars of your being work together for a single cause, real stuff can happen. This is the stuff we call “magic” when we observe them in others.
Start seeing it in yourself and you will believe in the amazing, immeasurable power of a human being who is decisive, on purpose, focused and full of conviction. You can be that person. You ARE that person.
Even more reason to stop your self-limiting beliefs: they actually get in your way to move up the corporate ladder because your management won’t find it attractive. This is not a quality they look for in a leader.
And if you want to learn about what else your management and boss want from you to move you up the corporate ladder, you might benefit from Crack the Code to Get Promoted program where I give you the complete insider scoop (that corporations just fail to tell their employees!)

So practice your affirmations daily. Do them on your drive to work, before your meeting and before you present to your boss. Do them any moment that you hear the negative thoughts pop up.
